Random Book Stuff

Some awesome libraries

I'd love to have a huge library. I don't usually re-read books but I hate to get rid of them.

This comic explains it well.

Book quotes

Books had instant replay long before televised sports. ~Bern Williams

These are not books, lumps of lifeless paper, but minds alive on the shelves. From each of them goes out its own voice... and just as the touch of a button on our set will fill the room with music, so by taking down one of these volumes and opening it, one can call into range the voice of a man far distant in time and space, and hear him speaking to us, mind to mind, heart to heart. ~Gilbert Highet

The oldest books are still only just out to those who have not read them. ~Samuel Butler

A house without books is like a room without windows. ~Heinrich Mann

You may have tangible wealth untold;
Caskets of jewels and coffers of gold.
Richer than I you can never be -
I had a mother who read to me.~Strickland Gillilan

Books are immortal sons deifying their sires. ~Plato

No entertainment is so cheap as reading, nor any pleasure so lasting. ~Mary Wortley Montagu

I thought this one was interesting,

There is a wonder in reading Braille that the sighted will never know: to touch words and have them touch you back. ~Jim Fiebig

And a short survey by me -

Hardcover or paperback?
I love hardcover, its so official and fancy looking. Paperback is nice because it is easier to carry them around since they are smaller and lighter.

Bookmarks or dogeared?
Bookmarks! I hate bending the pages it wears them down so much faster.

Best time to read?
I don't have a preference, anytime I'm bored or if I'm reading a book I really like I'll read it every spare second until I finish it.

Favorite book(s)?
Hmm. Thats hard. The Hunger Games/ Catching Fire is good. Right now I'm reading The Teahouse Fire and its pretty good. The Allanna series by Tamora Pierce is one excellent. Queen of Babble by Meg Cabot.

How about reading more than one book at a time?
I've done it before but I don't like it as much. I'll do it if I have to read something for school and I have something I want to read on my own.

A book you were assigned in school that you actually liked?
I actually liked a few, To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Night by Elie Wiesel, and The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle by Avi. There are two books I didn't enjoy reading, Great Expectations by Charles Dickens and The Old Man And The Sea by Earnest Hemmingway. Yuck.

Books

The other day I started a list of books I might get my niece for Christmas and for her birthday. It quickly turned into a list of books I think she should read but aren't necessarily in her reading skills (she is five...).

I thought back to books that were read to me in kindergarten - second grade. I looked them up on shelfari, amazon, and barnes and noble and found related books that I added to the list. I also went out to the garage to find some old picture books (an interesting decision considering I had allergies that day). Some old favorites I found were Frog Medicine, A Bad Case Of Stripes, and The Mysterious Tadpole. I remember Corduroy and Where The Wild Things Are but they weren't my favorites.

There are some I put on the list that I didn't read but she might like anyways (Pinkalicous and Purplelicous).

Some books she might like when she is older are the Junie B Jones books and eventually The Face On The Milk Carton series.

What books would you suggest for someone younger?

Football, Band, Photography

I went to the football game last night. We won 34-14. Woo hoo!

So anyways I went to the game primarily to watch halftime and I gotta say, the band's show this year is pretty awesome. Sorry I don't have any pictures, posts seem so boring without pictures. I missed marching but overall I'm glad I got out. I'm still looking for pictures to put into my band posts but I didn't forget about it.

I brought a camera home from tech yesterday for an assignment, I'm pretty happy. We're useing black and white film and for this assignment we have a flash so I don't know what to expect with my pictures.

Bao

Thank you for your patience ladies and gentlemen. This young horse is Bao. I'm not 100% we're keepin' him but I'm about 80% sure we are. He is supposed to be a good ridin' and ropin' horse but hes awfully jumpy. Someone is supposed to come out and ride him to make sure he is rideable. I hope he is..I think he is once he gets comfortable with you. With me hes always ready to run from me. Oh well. He decided to stay towards the back for awhile.
He finally came to me and I fed him a handful of food (yes, from my hands). I have another picture I kinda like, he had laid down and I tried to take a picture but by the time I got over there he had gotten back up so the picture looks a bit like he is turning a corner while running but he also looks kinda freaked out.

The Pit Dragon Trilogy

I'm reading this book, The Pit Dragon Trilogy by Jane Yolen. Its actually all three books in one binding. I'm not quite finished with it but I like what I've read so far (455 pages out of 470). It does get a little strange and I think that might put some people off, I still like it.

The books are; Dragon's Blood, Heart's Blood, and A Sending Of Dragons

Jakkin is a bonder on Austar IV. He lives and works in a dragon nursery. His job is to clean the stalls and bathe the dragons. His job will remain stall boy until he fills his bag with gold, at that time he can buy himself and become a master. He wasn't always a bonder, Jakkin was born free. However, when he was very young his father was killed while trying to tame a feral dragon. His mother was forced to sell herself and her young son to provide food and shelter. She died only a year later. Jakkin believes his only way out is to steal a dragon egg, raise it to be a great fighter, and earn his gold at the Pitts where offworlders and Austarians spend their spare time betting on dragon fights.

And thats only the first book! Did I mention that theres a girl, Akki?
